fashion inspiration: the nutcracker.

For many, hearing Nutcracker music on Christmas commercials marks the beginning of the holiday season. For dancers across the world, it means you have no life, no sleep, no energy until Christmas (some dancers have been hearing Nutcracker music since the summer...).
The Nutcracker Suite, composed by Tchaikovsky, is a holiday tradition that people cherish every year. And although I do complain about it being the most stressful performance/time of the year, I love every bit of it.

If you do not know the story of the Nutcracker, click here (for trusty Wikipedia).

Because Nutcracker is taking over my life right now and opening night is in a week, I thought I would bring a little bit of it over to my blog! I have created several outfits inspired by characters from the ballet. I tried to incorporate casual, night-out, and party looks within all of the outfits. Enjoy!

Clara is the wide-eyed, innocent girl that has no idea that she's about to experience one of the most magical nights of her life. She comes from a pretty wealthy family, so make sure to wear classic and sophisticated jewelry. The hair bow adds a playfulness to the effortlessly sexy combination of the dress and tights.
The Nutcracker doubles up as a soldier and fights off the mouse king. Pair a double breasted military coat with a cap for an overall military feel; a bullet shell necklace can also be a contributing piece. Accent the white pants with a gold belt, and to avoid looking like an actual toy soldier, find some wedged boots to complete the look.

Drosselmeyer brings his life-size dolls to the Christmas party for entertainment - one of which is a columbine doll. Many columbine doll costumes have the diamond pattern to match the harlequin doll. This one-shouldered diamond pattern top with leather leggings are perfect for a fun night out in the city. Don't forget some fake lashes and bright pink lipstick to be completely dolled up!
After the Nutcracker defeats the Rat King, he transforms into a handsome prince. He leads Clara through a forest where they are greeted by the Snow Queen and King. They perform a beautiful pas de deux, and the snowflakes dance around Clara and the Prince as they continue through the forest. The Snow Queen is elegant and regal, and she deserves to be covered in ice. And so do you! I think this outfit would be perfect for a New Year's Eve party. Don't be afraid to end the year with a lot of glitter!
Act II begins with Clara and the Prince arriving in the Land of Sweets. They are greeted by angels and the court of the Sugar Plum Fairy. In celebrating their guest, sweets from around the world dance for Clara and the Prince. This outfit is inspired by the chocolate from Spain. Layer some necklaces and add a ring to create more dimension to the simple top and skirt.
Next to dance is the sultry Arabian coffee. The Arabian soloist is sexy without even trying, and this outfit does just that. A crop top and some harem pants are sexy and casual at the same time. The flats make this outfit perfect for a date or running some errands.
Tea from China dance with so much energy. Their costumes are always colorful and fun to reflect the high energy dance. Try colorblocking with some fun colors for more pop this winter. This is another great New Year's Eve or cocktail party outfit. Add some hair sticks for an Asian flair!
Marzipan from France dance with their reed flutes. My favorite Marzipan costumes I have ever seen are the ones used in Southwest Virginia Ballet's Nutcracker (I got to wear one back in 2009!). I love the colors and the lace; they're just so pretty! I used those colors and design as inspiration for this outfit. And a French girl isn't complete without some Chanel.

The Russians perform a Trepak dance with impressive jumps and mesmerizing moves. This outfit is for those mid to late winter days with freezing temperatures. Layer up a sweater and a leather jacket and accessorize with a faux fur hat and some convertible mittens. And to battle dry winter skin, I love Clinique's Moisture Surge. It gives you the perfect amount of moisture without being oily.
A beautiful waltz is danced by a group of sugared flowers and a Dewdrop. Wear a summer floral dress during the winter! Add some tights and a cardigan to quickly make your summer dresses a part of your winter wardrobe too.
Finally, the queen of the Land of Sweets - the Sugar Plum Fairy - performs a grand pas de deux with her Cavalier. She has such a gentle and graceful character, and it is reflected in the pale pinks of this outfit. Add more glitter with some pumps and a clutch to make you feel more like a princess.
And in case you didn't notice, this pearl bracelet is the same one I used in the Clara outfit. In the version of Nutcracker that I have performed for several years, the Sugar Plum Fairy presents Clara with a tiara when she arrives in the Land of Sweets. When Clara all of a sudden finds herself back in her home with the Nutcracker, she still has the tiara on her head making it less of a dream and more real. I thought the bracelet could kind of represent the tiara.
I hope you liked this fashion inspiration post! Let me know what you think or what you'd like to see in some comments!

PS. As you know, I am a trainee with the Richmond Ballet, and I will be performing in their production of "The Nutcracker" starting next weekend. If you would like to experience the holiday tradition for yourself, you should come see the ballet! The show runs from December 16th through December 26th, and it will be performed at Centerstage. first RVAFB meetup!

 shirt: thrifted.
vest: charlotte russe.
pants: gap.
boots: h&m.
scarf: vintage.
satchel: forever 21.

I just realized that the outfit that I wore to the RVAFB meet-up last night is very similar to this outfit. Same colors, just switched the pieces around. Oops!

But the meet-up last night was so much fun! I was a little nervous about going because I haven't been blogging for very long, but I'm so glad I did. I've been reading many of the blogs based here in RVA, and it was exciting to actually meet the brilliant minds behind the computers and laptops they use to blog. Not only did I make more connections for the future of my blog, but I found myself making friends and becoming a part of the community that I am so passionate about.

I am not going to lie, I was particularly starstruck when I saw that Brian McDaniel of Dirty Richmond was there. As you may (or may not) know, I swoon over street style blogs. And Brian takes amazing pictures of the street style here in Richmond, and I am still in awe at all the well-dressed people in a small city like Richmond.

And since I am so new to this style blogging business, I had a lot of questions, and they were all answered with great advice. I soaked it all in, and it has really inspired me to really get this blog on a roll. I can't wait to see it grow, and I hope you all will begin to enjoy it more and more!

I will be sure to add a blogroll of all the local bloggers here in RVA so you can begin to follow them too!

 sweater: forever 21.
dress: charlotte russe.
tights: hue.
boots: forever 21.

I found today's outfit rather quirky. But everyone needs a little quirk in their life every once and a while!

Tomorrow is December, I can't believe it! Where has the year gone? This year has seriously flown by, and I'm rather sad to see 2011 quickly come to an end. This year has been rather good to me, but it's not over yet! I will live up the last month of the year to the best of my abilities!
December also means Christmas! Christmas is my favorite time of the year - I love the festiveness that it brings to everything. Since I'm super behind on part 2 of my "fall fashion wishlist", I might have to change it to my "Christmas list"!

What's on your Christmas list this year?

happy thanksgiving!

shirt: thrifted.
skirt: pacsun. (borrowed from my sister)
shoes: bakers.
earrings: forever 21.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
It's so good to be back home and spend some quality time with my family and eat more food than I should. Today reminded me that we shouldn't take the things that we have in life for granted. We always search for greater things and reach for higher beings, but we should remember what we have right here in front of us. There's nothing wrong with searching for greater things, just remember to be thankful for what you already have.

Today also reminded me why I love autumn so much! Autumn colors are so beautiful. I got inspired when I saw my sister's mustard yellow pencil skirt, and she was nice enough to let me borrow it! The Baker's shoes I wore today were such a good deal! I received a coupon for 20% off and got them the same weekend Baker's was having free shipping on all shoes. I couldn't turn down a deal for a hot pair of shoes like these!

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Show me what you wore for the holiday!

fellow fashion lover: tai.

Thank you so much to Tai for being the first featured fellow fashion lover on my blog! I've been dying to interview him, but I had to wait until I got back home to Roanoke. I asked him a few questions and if you are sensitive to profanity, please excuse his language...

i'm coming home.

 shirt + boots: h&m.
pants: gap.
cardigan: forever 21.

Is it possible to have too much fun with color? I just love the colorblocking trend...
I got these amazing burgundy skinny corduroys when I went on that huge shopping spree a few weeks ago. I am absolutely in love with them. The color is fantastic, and they are so damn comfortable! They were quite a splurge, but I couldn't walk out of the Gap store without them.

I'm going home today for Thanksgiving break, and I am so excited to go home! I love the city and I love school, but I am so ready to see my family and friends. I packed a huge suitcase of clothes for the week, and people might say that I'm over packing but I just can't go anywhere without a lot of clothes. I am so indecisive about outfits that I have to bring numerous options to choose from. I'll have an idea of what I'd like to wear, but then I'll change my mind later. But that's how I come up with some of my best outfits, so I won't complain.

What are you wearing for Thanksgiving?

eleven. eleven. eleven.

shirt: thrifted.
shorts: forever 21.
shoes: h&m.
earrings: forever 21.

I bought these new ankle boots this past weekend when I had a crazy craving to go shopping. They are my new favorite shoes ever. They're so comfortable!

The weather was a little chillier today, so I went with some tights and put my summer shorts to good use. I have such a weakness of paisley, and I love this shirt. I try so hard not to wear it all the time!

So today is 11-11-11. The day to make your ultimate wish! Don't forget! I hope all your wishes come true!

i'm back!

blazer: thrifted.
shirt: forever21.
shorts: a small boutique in nyc.
socks: target.
shoes: journey's.
necklace: forever21.

I apologize for being M.I.A. for the past forever. I had some personal issues that I spent so much of my time and energy dealing with it that I haven't had time or energy to blog. And it really upset me because I just began my fashion blogging! But I am back! I have all my priorities straight, and my blogging will be back to the way it should be.

Fall is finally here in RVA, but it's still being bipolar! The high all week is around 70, so I'm getting a little frustrated...but the outfit I wore today is something for those weird fall weather kind of days. Last summer when I lived in NYC for 6 weeks for a dance program, I did too much a lot of shopping. And we ended up around a long line of boutiques with totally chic clothes for amazing prices. I was in heaven. And I got these amazing shorts at one of those stores. One of my favorite purchases ever.

I'm sorry that I'm still photographing with my camera phone. I'm going to try and steal back my camera from back home when I go back for Thanksgiving.

Sorry again for being gone for so long! I hope you will still stick around with me!
And stay tuned for another vlog from me and Breck coming out next week!

birthdays call for sparkly leggings.

sweater: unknown.
shirt: h&m.
sparkle leggings: jcpenny.
boots: belk.
earrings + necklace: forever 21.

Happy birthday to me! I'm finally eighteen! (It's a big deal when you're in college and surrounded by people that are legal adults except you)
I don't have many plans for today since it's a school day, but I will be getting my bellybutton pierced tonight! I've been wanting it done for a while, and now I'm old enough to get it by myself. Tattoos are definitely next on the list, but I'm going to hold off on those for another week or two.
I thought these sparkly leggings were very fitting of my big birthday. This Richmond weather is really starting to piss me off because it can't seem to make up its mind...

colorblocking + coffee.

 sunglasses: h&m.
shirt: zara.
vest: charlotte russe.
sweater: forever 21.
skirt: mango.
socks: forever 21.
shoes: journey's.
photo cred.

I went color crazy today and tried out the colorblocking trend that has been popular since the spring. I always complained about not having a colorblocked dress or shoes or something, but then I realized that I could always color block with individual pieces! I'm pretty satisfied with this outfit. What do you guys think?

I wore this outfit out today to go to coffee with Breck of! She did another feature on me as an up and coming fashion blogger! I love meeting up with Breck; it's always nice talking about fashion with someone that actually enjoys/goes crazy over it too. And not to mention, she takes pictures of my outfit with an actual camera! We discussed a project we're going to work on, so make sure to keep and eye out and stay tuned to both of our blogs for it!

Part 2 of my fall fashion wishlist will be coming up soon!

fall fashion wishlist part one.

At the beginning of every season, I think about the articles and pieces that I want to add to my wardrobe for the season. I think about the current trends as well as versatility. Fall has certainly begun, and I have been thinking about what I really need want this season.

So in honor of the beginning of October and the change in weather, here is part one of my fall fashion wishlist!

Jeffrey Campbell Lita Boots

All avid fashion blog readers should have noticed that the Jeffrey Campbell Lita boot has been seen in a lot more street style looks, and I am dying to get a pair. I've seen them on model Audrey Kitching for a while wondering if they would ever catch on, and they sure enough did! I love heels to begin with, but I love how they can turn any outfit into something really high fashion and chic. I'm the type of person to throw a pair of heels on to just make a run to the grocery store, and if I had a pair of these I would wear them to the grocery store all the time - my go-to shoe.
The huge platform and chunky heel has got to make them easier to walk in too. I've read on other style blogs that they're actually quite comfortable. I really love all the colors and patterns that they come in, but it makes it a lot harder to choose which on I like the best! They are quite the investment ($150-$200), but I am definitely going to try and get a pair within the next couple months or so!

Trench Coat
As I said before, I love layering. It's an easy way to add dimension to a simple outfit. I love the trench because it is a stylish layering piece that adds dynamic. Also, there are many different styles that are available for trench coats. The double breasted look is really in this year, and I've always loved the military look. I really want one for the bi-polar weather here in Richmond!

Chino Pants

I really want some nice pants to wear this fall and winter. All my pants are jeans, and I would really like to have some nice chinos to wear. What I love about chinos is that they give an outfit a classy professional look so effortlessly. Even if I was feeling lazy or totally blanking out on a good outfit idea (you know we all have those days), I could throw on some chinos and look like I put a lot of effort and thought into the whole look. Effortless. My biggest problem with pants is that my legs are super short (I am only 5'3", wahhh). So I have to find pants that will flatter my petite stature and still achieve the look that I'm going for.

Maxi Skirt
maxi skirts

I've read in several fashion magazines that maxi dresses/skirts aren't meant for petite girls. But I honestly beg to differ. I own two maxi dresses, and they're among my favorite things to wear during the spring and summer. With the season change, the maxi skirt is perfect for achieving the same elegant look for the colder weather. I really want a pleated or sheer one that I could pair with a mini skirt underneath or some stockings to layer up even more. Another fun piece for the weather transition.

Long Sleeve Shirts + Button-Ups
button ups and longsleeves

I guess you've noticed that I want to be a little more dressier. I honestly believe that it isn't that hard to get nicely dressed up for the day, but people don't. I know I have my days where I seriously have no idea what to wear, but I still try hard to look my best. For example, I have an 8am. Definitely not the easiest thing to look super cute at 7am. But I still try! Anyway, back to these tops...I need more button-up shirts to layer up underneath my many sweaters. And not to mention that androgyny is back in for this fall/winter. So I definitely need to stock up on the menswear starting with more button-ups!

I love accessories. However, the main accessory I obsess over is a pair of earrings. I drool over earrings, but I really need to start wearing more necklaces and bracelets. I really like pendant necklaces, in particular. The layering trend for fall just doesn't have to go for sweaters and shirts, it can go with necklaces too! I want to get more necklaces to experiment with layering several of them to add even more depth to a simple outfit.

That's the end of part one of my fall fashion wishlist! I hope you enjoyed it and got an idea of my style. This is only part one! Keep checking back for part two to be coming soon! Thanks!

where are you, fall?

 shirt: unknown.
jeggings: unknown.
boots: forever 21.
necklace: forever 21.

It's practically October, and people are still wearing shorts. Does anyone else think there's something wrong with that? I'm ready to make use of my huge scarf and sweater collection! It was definitely nice to see the sun out today after the rain. But still the temperature is still too hot for the fall that I remember. I am so ready for the smell of the air that I always associate with fall!

On a side note, I really need to take better pictures of my looks. Currently I am using my phone's camera with self timer on top of my microwave (so the angle makes my legs look even shorter!). I need friends with cameras, so I can take pictures in places other than in front of my dorm wardrobe....
Also, I really need to start remembering where I buy my clothes. I feel so dumb putting up "unknown" for half of the things in my outfit. I will try my best to either remember where I get the clothes from or just buy new clothes so it's easier to remember. I'm thinking the latter ;)

Speaking of shopping, my birthday is coming up. And my family is coming into town the weekend after, and I am sad to say that my mom still pays for pretty much all my clothes. I feel terrible, but how else am I supposed to pay for them right now? Poor college kid...but I am looking for a lot of versatile basics that I can wear this fall. I am currently working on my fall fashion wishlist, and I will post it up for all of you to check out!

Can't wait to really get this blog rolling. Thanks for reading and sticking around while I get my feet on the ground!
